Restoring Mobility, Independence, and Opportunity in Shirati

Since 2019, SARDO has proudly partnered with Whirlwind Wheelchair to improve access to appropriate mobility solutions for people with disabilities in the Shirati community.

Through this partnership, individuals with mobility challenges have been able to access durable wheelchairs designed to support greater independence and participation in everyday life. One of the mobility devices provided through this initiative is the RoughRider wheelchair, which is designed to perform well on uneven and challenging terrain commonly found in rural communities.

For many people with disabilities, access to the right wheelchair can make a major difference. It can improve the ability to move around the community, reach places of work, access services, connect with others, and participate more fully in daily life.

Ja Kowark’s Story.

One of the people who has benefited from this initiative is Ja Kowark.

Before receiving his RoughRider wheelchair, moving around the community and reaching his business was more difficult. With the new wheelchair, Ja kowark has been able to move with greater independence and access his business more easily.

His experience shows how an appropriate mobility device can support much more than movement. It can help strengthen independence, dignity, participation, and access to livelihood opportunities.

Ja’s story has also drawn the attention of other people in the community who face similar mobility challenges. As more families and individuals learn about the benefits of appropriate wheelchairs, the demand for mobility support continues to grow.

A Growing Need

Despite the progress made, many people with disabilities in Shirati and surrounding communities still lack access to suitable mobility devices.

For some, an unsuitable or damaged wheelchair can make it difficult to travel on local roads, reach schools, access healthcare, participate in work, or engage fully in community life.

SARDO remains committed to identifying people who need mobility support and working with partners to expand access to appropriate wheelchairs and other assistive devices.
